Dr Ruth Herbert

Ruth Herbert is a Project CREATE Co-Investigator and a music psychologist working at City St George’s, University of London. She was formerly a Senior Lecturer in Music Psychology and Music Performance at the University of Kent.

A music psychologist and professional pianist, she has a keen interest in how and why people engage with the arts – particularly music – in everyday life, how creative engagement shapes ways of being in and experiencing the world, and how participatory arts can support health and wellbeing.

Ruth was previously a Co-Investigator for an  AHRC project investigating autistic girls’ identities/experiences, and she has also been Principal Investigator for a British Academy study of age-related differences in 10-18 year-olds experiences of music.

A key focus of Ruth’s current and past projects has been how arts-based creative engagement – in both daily life and community and clinical contexts – can support mental health. See  here for an example.
