For many young people, loneliness is an unspoken reality. At Project CREATE's recent Living Lab our young participants explored this issue through artistic expression, particularly collaging. Across three different perspectives, a common theme emerged: the power of creativity to foster connection, self-expression and understanding.

This weekend was about more than just creating art for Dario - it was about supporting others. “The weekend to me is a way to support my community and other young people who may be struggling, showing them that they are not alone and that they do have help, and they are supported.”

A space for new perspectives

One of the most striking aspects of the weekend was seeing how people responded differently to the same creative prompt. Dario noted, “Even when given the same prompt, the piece of art is almost always different for everyone, showing just how many ideas and perspectives someone can get from just one prompt.”

Similarly, Bhini was struck by how varied the outcomes were, despite everyone using the same materials and techniques.

“At the end, it was fascinating to look at everyone’s piece and see just how different they all were, even though we were all given the same tips and materials. This diversity of thought reinforced the idea that art is deeply personal, shaped by individual experiences, emotions, and ways of seeing the world."

Freedom in creativity

For Srhya, the weekend provided a rare sense of relief from the pressures of university life. The simple act of collaging - a childhood pastime for many - became a powerful tool for self-expression and reflection.

“Collaging isn’t something I’d revisited since primary school, so returning to such a simple and creative activity was both grounding and nostalgic.”

This sense of letting go and surrendering control was something she found particularly valuable: “It became, in every sense, a retreat from societal norms, expectations, and the stresses of everyday life.”

The opportunity to step away from constant digital connectivity and engage in real, in-person interactions was a reminder of how essential creative spaces are for mental well-being.

Loneliness and the role of creativity

A key theme of the weekend was the role of creative expression in addressing loneliness. Srhya reflected on the impact of social media, which often makes people feel more isolated rather than connected.

“Even in the privacy of our own spaces, there’s a lingering sense of accessibility, exposure, and subtle pressure to present a curated version of ourselves.”

For Dario, collaging was particularly powerful because it allowed raw, unfiltered emotions to emerge. “Collaging is a great form of art as it allows a person to fully express themselves by putting their authentic and raw feelings, emotions, and ideas on paper without holding back how they truly feel.”

Through creativity, the weekend fostered connection and understanding, proving that art can be a bridge between isolation and community.

As Srhya put it, “While loneliness doesn’t vanish entirely, creativity transforms it into something meaningful - offering insight, fostering connection, and creating a quiet sense of belonging through shared creative experiences.”

Final reflections from the collaging Living Lab

Beyond the creative process, the weekend was filled with unexpected moments of joy and discovery. Bhini described arriving on Saturday morning to a cold and gloomy day, expecting a slow start, only to be surprised: “I didn’t know that I was going to make some of the best memories I had in a while.”

From icebreakers that led to laughter to deep discussions about self-expression and connection, the weekend left a lasting impact on all who attended.

It was a reminder that creativity is not just an outlet - it is a vital tool for understanding ourselves and others, breaking down barriers, and fostering a sense of belonging.

As Dario summed up, his biggest takeaway from the weekend was the diversity of thought and perspective. Seeing how different people’s experiences shape their art has given him a new appreciation for creative expression.

For everyone involved, the weekend reaffirmed a simple but powerful truth: art has the ability to bring people together, spark new ways of thinking and create spaces where people feel seen, heard and understood.
